CORNANURNEY [H596094]
There is very little known about the history of this lead or lead-silver
mine, also known as "Wheal Burrowes". The latter name suggests a Cornish
connection, but nothing is currently known about this, or indeed about
the name "Burrowes". The site is engraved on the 2nd Edition OS map of
1856, but it is neither listed, nor production noted in Mineral Statistics.
Arsenical lead sulphide and barytes are noted at the site in the c. 1875
field records of the Geological Survey of Ireland, though arsenical minerals
were not observed when visited by Dr. M.V.OBrien in 1956. When visited
in 1984, the only visible remains included a small spoil heap, two pits,
a trench and the portals of two adits. [Morris, 1984]
