Hope Mine, Co. Monaghan

HOPE MINE [H831161]
This was once one of the biggest lead mines in Monaghan, with production
records in Mineral Statistics extending intermittently from 1852 - 1869,
albeit under several different names [Hope (Dundalk); Dundalk. Also known
as Cornalough and/or Carricakagarvan], and the mine is listed up to 1874.
Although references to the site apparently date from about 1800, the mine
is not engraved upon either the 1836 or 1856 editions of the OS maps,
although the position and orientation of lodes, shafts and pits are annotated
upon a Geological Survey of Ireland map dated 1873. These show two separate
lode systems, one in Cornalough townland, the other in Carrickagarvan.

Currently visible remains in Cornalough include an Engine House chimney,
now the only remaining mine chimney in County Monaghan, shaft depressions,
and several spoil heaps. In 1983, land drainage works exposed a c. 29m
long, blind adit into part of the workings in Carrickagarvan. An internal,
c. 12.5m deep winze, timbered and flooded to adit floor level, is located
at c. 20m in from the adit portal.
