LEMGARE LEAD MINE [H804281]
The earliest reference to this mine, under the name Lemgar Lead Mine,
occur in three successive half yearly reports of the Mining Company of
Ireland, from June 1840 to June 1841. Subsequent reports, in 1862, 1877
and 1889, note three shafts at the site, and that it had been worked.
The mine was briefly re-examined by a local businessman, Mr. Michael Hughes,
in 1953, at which time it was also surveyed by Dr. M.V.OBrien. Currently
visible remains include two large pits, each about 2m deep, spoil heaps
and a blocked up adit portal. [Morris, 1984]
